Product Description

This furoshiki features a two-part indigo design combining the traditional Shippou (seven treasures) pattern with circular motifs inspired by shibori dyeing.

The design is based on actual hand-dyed shibori artworks created by an artist and has been carefully reworked into a textile pattern suitable for everyday use.

In shibori dyeing, the fabric is not only resist-dyed at the tied points, but also shows az subtle, radiating areas where the dye is softly blocked around them.

Rather than sharply defining these areas, this design preserves their gentle transitions and blurred boundaries as part of the visual language of the cloth.

The upper section features the repeating Shippou pattern, symbolizing connection and continuity.

The lower section is composed of circular forms derived from real hand-dyed motifs, arranged to create contrast and balance within a single piece of fabric.

Design Philosophy

This design brings together two different expressions of “circle”:

The Shippou pattern represents circles that connect and extend endlessly.

The shibori-inspired circles, by contrast, are traces left by tying, resisting, and allowing the dye to move naturally through the cloth.

By placing these two elements within one textile, the design explores the coexistence of structure and irregularity, intention and chance.

The indigo color division is intentionally soft, reflecting the way dye boundaries naturally appear in hand-dyed fabric rather than creating a hard visual split.

About the Original Motif

The final image in the product gallery shows a detail of the original hand-dyed shibori artwork that served as the source motif for this design.

While this product is not hand-dyed fabric itself, the textures, resist patterns, and subtle variations visible in the design are directly informed by an actual hand-dyed piece.
