Explanation of the Artwork: “Moonlit View from Kiyomigata – Takeda Shingen”
This artwork from Tsuki Hyakushi (One Hundred Aspects of the Moon) by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi portrays Takeda Shingen gazing at the full moon over Miho no Matsubara with Mount Fuji in the background. The scene reflects a moment of triumph when Shingen conquered Suruga Province, finally reaching the sea after ruling the landlocked Kai Province.
The title comes from a waka poem attributed to Shingen, where he expresses his wish to stop time and gaze at the moon forever. Yoshitoshi integrates this sentiment into the composition, symbolizing the fleeting nature of power and victory.
Though Shingen later achieved military success, he passed away before realizing his ambitions. This piece immortalizes his moment of glory, as if freezing time under the moonlight, transforming history into a poetic and mystical vision.
