KUMIHIMO:The Art of Japanese Silk Braiding
Japanese braided cords have been deeply involved in various fields such as religion, rituals, entertainment, clothing, and furnishings, creating new uses following the times, and developing techniques and designs accordingly.
You can feel Japanese culture with this silk kumihimo braid.
This kumi-himo is characterized by its unique finish, where each grain is large and bulky.
It is called “Yotsukumi” because only four balls (weights) are used to tie the threads together.
“Yotsukumi” is said to be the basis of kumi-himo, and because of its simple structure, it is difficult to make a beautifully straight cord, so skilled techniques are required for hand-braiding. (*This Kumihimo is braided by the machine.)
This braided cord is tightly braided and does not stretch or shrink. Its round shape is maintained when a bracelet is made.
You will be amazed that this beautiful shape is made only with soft silk threads.

The kumihimo is made in a traditional Japanese workshop in IGA and is very strong. It can be used as a belt or cut to any length to make a bracelet or necklace.

Iga City in Mie Prefecture has long been known as the hidden home of the Ninja. Closed off from the rest of the country by mountains on all four sides, this closed-off area has led to the development of the kumihimo industry, which requires a lot of patience. In the workshops of Iga, the old kumihimo machines, which are highly valuable, are kept in good condition and are used every day to make beautiful, strong and precise kumihimo.
