This exquisite square kumihimo braid is meticulously crafted in Japan using four carefully selected silk colours. Expertly woven to create sharp, clean lines, its striking contrast evokes the refined strength and splendour reminiscent of traditional samurai aesthetics.

Unlike round Edo-uchi-himo, this braid features a defined square cross-section. Though constructed with the same 8-strand technique, it has a slightly firmer structure, giving it a precise, architectural character while maintaining the softness of premium silk.

The well-defined edges and structured corners make this cord especially suitable for high-end jewellery that requires both elegance and stability. Its firm shape resists twisting and unraveling, making it ideal for bracelets, necklaces, gemstone jewellery, and spiritually inspired designs.

The combination of four silk threads creates depth and vibrancy in colour, enhancing the visual richness of every piece you create.

The Meaning of Kumihimo

Kumihimo is a treasured traditional Japanese craft with deep symbolic meaning. Historically used in samurai armour, kimono accessories, and sacred objects, braided cords are believed to represent:

• The connection of objects to objects
• The bonding of people to people
• The strengthening of relationships

Because of this symbolism, kumihimo has long been used for obijime (kimono cords), scroll decorations, Buddhist ritual objects, and sacred sutra bindings.
